I started working on a special Christmas present. I knew I wanted to do something incorporating my 3 boys as well as our back woods that the boys love to play in. After some research and inspirational searches, I decided to create the 4 seasons of the year with each son in the season of their birth.
For this needle felting project, I started with a bluish piece of wool, I added in blues and whites mixed a swirled together to create the sky. I shaped the trees and added the ground. The tree canopies were then added using scraps and pieces from mixed dyed lots. After several hours I had completed the background, as well as a little birds nest with 2 eggs inside on the spring side. The next challenge would be to add the kids and finishing details without overdoing or overworking what I already completed.
I added the boys, each doing something inspired by them. My oldest loves to climb our chestnut tree and is an early summer baby. My middle son is a rambunctious fall baby and loves to run around and jump through the leaves. My youngest is my spring baby, he is quiet, gentle, sweet, and he loves to pick the flowers. I decided to add a snowman in the winter being a favored winter activity, and I added a cardinal in the snowy limbs. Overall, I was happy with how this came out. There were a few things I would have done differently but overall, I'm satisfied with it. the problem I realized is I had not made a way to display this piece. I created it to be a wall hanging as a kind of portrait. I didn't want to frame it though. I wanted it to remain rustic and natural like the wool I used.
Luckily, I had some scrap wool pieces and was able to make loops with those. I sent my husband out to the back woods in search of a branch, and voila` it was done.
Living on a shoestring and making the most of the lemons
Life is not easy, we all know this by now, but life is what you make it, no matter how corny that sounds (rhymes and all). Some days you can't wait for them to just be over and others, why can't they last longer. So let's make the most of it, make the shoe string budget as long as you can and make the best darn lemonade you've ever had!
