Recently I was asked to make a fondant topper for a birthday party. "The birthday girl just loves her dog Gracie, she does this silly thing with her blanket when she naps, can you make that?" ...
Now here is the thing, normally when I do toppers and cake creations, if I’m creating a character, animal or creature, there is room for artistic interpretation. Creating a sculpture of someone’s beloved pet is much different than just making something to a general theme. Oh, yea and this was to be top secret, which meant Facebook creeping the birthday girl for as many images of her loyal companion as possible. When the creation day finally arrived, I sat at my table staring at the pile of freshly made rice crispy treats and thought well here goes nothing. The last thing I wanted to do was to create this topper and have it be just a dog, it needed to be Gracie. After about an hour of getting the body and head shape just right I spent the next few hours covering and shaping my fondant. I was trying to balance between what I could do in the time I had and what I wanted to do. Fondant is great for creating toppers but, personally I feel, it's not so great when you want something to be realistic. after a few more hours of pacing and trying not to scrap it and start over, Gracie was born! Overall, I was happy with it. I would change a few things, but it was a great experience and the important thing is the birthday girl was ecstatic!
I was so excited when I was sent a few photos of the topper on the cake the birthday girls mother made her, I love getting to see pictures of the toppers on their cakes. Check out all the photos in the slide show below.

Life is not easy, we all know this by now, but life is what you make it, no matter how corny that sounds (rhymes and all). Some days you can't wait for them to just be over and others, why can't they last longer. So let's make the most of it, make the shoe string budget as long as you can and make the best darn lemonade you've ever had!
